Kindergarten

Hard to believe...my baby started kindergarten. I cried three times. Once when he picked out what he was going to wear on his first day of school, the second time when we walked into the classroom, and the third time when he waved goodbye as Paul and I left. I love you little man.

Sahalie has been wondering for the last couple of months when she gets to go to "pretty school"....a.k.a. pre-school. She knows the school well because of Spencer and she even has the same teachers, Mr. Brian and Ms. Heather (Mr. Heather to Sahalie.) She waved her goodbyes and told me it was time for me to go because it was "her school". And Mr. Brian thought she was shy.....

Our Favorite Spot

We got it....our favorite camp spot on Sparks Lake. We have brought the kids here before but have never camped. South Sister was in her full glory, the lake was warm and glassy, the s'mores were off the hook as well as the stars and we got to wake up to early morning canoe adventures. We shared stories of Uncle Jim who camped on the lake for his honeymoon and saw no one for two weeks to when Paul and I wrote our vows in that very spot. A pretty special place for sure.

Our first canoe outing of the season. The snow pack was so big this year that the boat ramp just opened and it was hard to find a beach spot, but it didn't stop us. Sahalie managed to be naked within minutes and Spencer caught the biggest frog I have ever seen.

Lots of 4th of July fun to be had this year. Of course, the annual pet parade with the flying chihuahua, popsicles, slip and slide madness with Uncle Todd, big boy fireworks (sparklers don't cut it anymore) and of course, the fireworks on top of Pilot Butte from my mom and dad's backyard. 2nd Annual Pine Mt. Camping Trip!

I helped Spencer celebrate his graduation from pre-school by taking him camping.
He didn't know until we picked him up and saw all the gear in the back of the truck, and boy did he get excited.
We drove out to Pine Mountain where I took him camping last year for the first time, and we stayed in the spot we found while exploring...you could see from Mt Bachelor all the way to a faint Mt St Helens!
We saw hang gliders and a huge telescope, ate smores and climbed on rocks, but mostly we just hung out and were boys.
Hard to believe that Spencer is so big these days.

You know summer has truly arrived in Central Oregon when you can go to the pool and not freeze your tush off. Notice it is only the kids who were in the water....Mama was "wading". The only time I actually got fully in the water was when Sahalie tried to drown herself in the hot tub. Yep, I went in fully clothed. Note to self....ALWAYS wear your suit underneath your clothes when you are at the pool with the Arney children.

Paul and I have been quizzing Sahalie on her colors and have noticed that everything seems to be "blue". I try hard not to compare my kids but can't help remembering that Spencer could count to 15 at this point, could sing his ABC's, and knew his colors. Hmmmmm.... All kids are different right? Well, sure enough, Sahalie put me in my place. As I was ordering us a smoothie, I turn around to find this. She was so proud and so was I....nice work Sahalie.

Our family is going through some mighty big changes as of late.
Staci is getting 'out there' with her business doing trainings, Sahalie and Spencer are rapidly maturing.
I'm quitting Deschutes Brewery after 7 years (I quit the first time after 6). The 'plan' is to create my own super special brewery up here in the woods. I've got a blog that I've started to tell the story of what we are calling 'Sahalie'.

After about 9 years since Staci and I left on our traveling odyssey, it feels real good to be chasing a dream again.

Well, it wasn't the best start to 2011 but I appreciate that sometimes you just have to love what is. Between the lice, children with 104 degree temperatures, sinus infections, flooding, and car troubles, we stayed busy enough and also realized that it was all just an inconvenience. Our mantra seemed to be, "no one is dying and no one has cancer." Because goodness, we have seen enough of our friends dealing with that lately. Snow Day

Growing up in Alaska, I always hoped for snow days. They rarely happened. In fact, I can only remember two days of school being canceled ever. I actually made it to the bus stop on one occasion to realize that I was the only one standing there...everyone else had heard over the radio that there was no school. I can't believe I missed that opportunity to sleep in!

So, imagine my surprise and excitement when Paul decides to take the day off work (for the third year in a row) for the first big snow of the season. (Insert the song "Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof) I will make sure to sleep in next year.

My original intention was to make it a home school lesson in math. You know...measuring, fractions, et all. Well, you might not be able to see the snow stick in this picture, but let me share that we got 10 new inches last night for a total of 36 so far. It reeked havoc in the neighborhood this morning as almost everyone got stuck on the road or the bridge as they were headed to work. All the neighbors were out with their snow plows and snow throwers trying to help....everyone except us since we broke the belt on ours last night. So while I spent an hour and half shoveling off the deck, Spencer was off sledding and Sahalie hung out in the hot tub. Lucky kids.

We opened the garage doors last weekend for a little celebrating. A couple bonfires in the yard to stay warm, excellent beer flowing from the fridge, and the groovy sounds of CORESPONDENTS filled the air. Uncle Doug and the band were heading south for a three week tour and we were lucky enough to get them live in the garage. And we even raised $160 of gas money for them. So, so fun.

Our friend Jasmine was on her way back to Mexico and decided to school us in authentic tortilla making. No measuring cups, no recipe, just 25 years experience of finding the right blend of masa, flour, and water. We laughed a lot, and maybe she was laughing at us. And although I can't really say my Spanish got any better, my tortilla making sure did! Thanks Yaz!!

Our First Real Snow

It's hard to believe that 5 days earlier it was 75 degrees. Both my kids inhaled their breakfast while I was out digging in the garage for their snow clothes. They were out the door by 8:15am and I didn't see them again until almost lunch. Be the end of the day we had accumulated 10 inches. Hopefully the snow thrower has gas......

One Last Hike

We got in one last hike before the snow fell 5 days later. We usually hike home from the falls a couple times in the summer, but we were so busy this year that this was actually our first time this season. It was fun to see the difference a year makes. Spencer made it the whole way (3 1/2 miles) without a complaint while taking good care of his little sister along the way. He told me it was because he has 5 year old legs now. Of course! Why didn't I think of that?

1st Annual Family Camp

Well, our Bend friends have camped together for many years but never like this. It was the first time we have gotten together since kids and boy did we take over the place. We had five campsites and I can't even count how many of us there were. We used to laugh that the dogs outnumbered the adults on our camping adventures and this time it was the kiddos. Quite an adventure indeed.

Hard to believe my baby turned 2. Staci did us right and claimed a historic A-frame from the OMSI science school up the road when it closed. Legend has it that these originally came from the Rajneesh and his goofy cult out in John Day in the 80's before acting as student wilderness housing in the Tumalo Creek Falls area for 25 years or so. Remember all the salmonella poisoning in the Dalles to rig the county elections? That Rajneesh. Anyway, it's ours now! Met a man that goes by the name of 'Swede'...he was making money moving these cabins for folks (there was 15 or 20 of these things). Swede was a what you call an original local. Moved his first building by the time he was 16...a hay barn that was turned into the Model A barn when the horses were replaced. He moved it home and parked his '47 Plymouth in it. He's one of those people you feel honored to know. So, Swede drops off the cabin and Todd and I (with Staci's gentle supervision) have almost moved it in to place.

Okay, they might not really be our "neighbors" but real close. My mom and dad finally did it...they bought a house in Bend. They came down and signed the papers in March and didn't waste much time putting a new coat of paint on the inside, refinishing the floors, spiffing up the yard, and just dreaming. It has been so fun to stop over for dinner, a trip to their neighborhood park or just to say hi. We are so lucky to have them closer and can't wait to see them here permanently. Love you guys!
